Have you given away your Social Security Number? The FTC is advising that consumers who provided Social Security numbers in response to an unsolicited E-mail or suspicious website "should contact one of the three credit reporting agencies, ask to have a fraud alert placed on their accounts, and obtain copies of their credit reports to be sure new accounts have not been opened in their names."

If you prefer, you can check your credit report yourself before contacting a credit bureau. Look for recently opened accounts that are not yours, and recent credit inquiries, that may indicate someone has tried to open accounts in your name.
