Some credit delinquencies are down, others are up. The rate of 30-day delinquencies is down to the lowest level since 1995 for closed-end installment credit, such as for home equity, personal loans, and auto financing. On the other hand, credit card delinquencies are up. Nearly 4 1/2 percent of credit card accounts are over 30 days past due. That's going to affect a lot of credit reports. (The record was 5.45% in 1996.)

According to the American Bankers Association chief economist, people often use credit cards to bridge the gap when unemployed, but this kind of divergence in delinquency rates is unusual.
